Why suffering is good

By Ru-an Zietsmann

No one likes to suffer. Going after pleasure and avoiding pain is a natural human tendency. But suffering is essential for happiness, contradictory as that might sound. Suffering creates contrast so that we are able to experience happiness and teaches us valuable lessons. Falling off your fist bicycle was not an enjoyable experience but after that you knew how to ride a bicycle and probably never fell off again.

Suffering makes us look past our social conditioning and makes us ask questions about the status quo. Because reality is an interpretation taking other people's truth for your own truth can be costly. We are all guilty of at some point accepting a truth just because we were told it is the truth. This is a problem because what works for other people may not work for us or it can hold us back.

This is the value of suffering. It teaches us to ask questions about the so called truths of society and we come to our own conclusions. This independent kind of thinking is essential for arriving at true and lasting happiness. If we don't suffer we never ask any questions and live superficial lives. People who alsways have it easy have no depth to them and they don't feel any compassion for those who suffer.

Of course balance is always important and we don't want to suffer all the time, then life would be pointless. Suffering should be welcomed as gift that comes along to teach us valuable lessons. It takes a lot of wisdom to live by this truth because suffering is not fun. But once this truth is accepted it transforms our lives. If suffering is embraced as a gift it doesn't hold the same power over us and we become free.

So true. In Japanese there is a saying, "Experience hardship even if you have to pay for it" (kurou wa katte demo shiro). Suffering can make you stronger, wiser, and a better person.
