Why drugs?

By Ru-an Zietsmann

Recreational drug use comes from a need to experience the ecstasy of our own spirit. Everyone has the need for happiness, it's a basic human need. Therefor if happiness can't be experienced in everyday life a person will seek alternative ways to experience it, which is where drug abuse comes in. There is two types of drug abusers.

The one uses drugs as a social device and the other uses it to cope with reality. Both these types of users can become a drug addict. But in the end it's all about finding happiness. I used to be addicted to sleeping pills because i was not able to sleep and had panic attacks. So in my case it was an attempt at dealing with reality.

I tried many times to come off it myself but it proved to be too hard, so I ended up going to rehab fro two weeks. In the end it was easier to get off it then I thought, I just needed to be in the right atmosphere. In rehab I saw what drugs can really do to people. I was just a minor case, and I considered myself lucky not having bigger drug problems.

Some of the other people was in rehab for months already and their chances was about one in five of successfully making a recovery. I believe the solution to drug addiction is a spiritual one. Drug abuse comes from a deep need to find meaning in life and experiencing higher states of consciousness. But there are better and healthier ways to do it.

Drugs can never fill the void in your soul because it's not a permanent solution. The abuser have to use more and more drugs as the body adjusts and the affects on the body can be devastating and irreversible. There are many ways to find spiritual fulfillment, but one of the best is through meditation. Meditation allows a person to experience silence, which is where the Source dwells.

When meditation is practiced of a regular basis it brings you closer to the source and completeness is experienced. Meditation is also a good way to get rid of addiction. In fact it may be the only real effective way. Meditation coupled with physical exercise, which is the meditation for the body, is a potent way of overcoming addiction.
