Who's Hot in 2009?

We're almost into the third month of the year and already there is some players making a move. So far five players have won multiple titles. They are Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Marin Cilic, Radek Stepanek, Tommy Robredo and Andy Murray. Interestingly Stepanek lost in the final of the Memphis tournament which means he was one title away from becoming the first player to win three titles this year. At 30 years of age he is one of the veterans of the game and and great to see he can still compete with the best of them. In the final of Memephis he played against Andy Roddick who is another player who looks in fantastic form at the start of 2009. Roddick lost 15 pounds over the off season he looks like a different player. In the semi-final of Memphis an old rivalry of tennis was revived when Roddick met Lleyton Hewitt. Hewitt has been struggling with injuries ever since he dominated the tennis world for two years but he seemed to be making a good recovery from hip surgery. It was only an unstoppable Roddick who kept him from making the final so I'm sure we will be seeing a lot more from Hewitt this season. Jo-Wilfred Tsonga is another exciting player who can threaten the top players with his attacking all court game. Tsonga was on the sidelines for a big part of 2008 due to injury so he won't have any points to defend until late in the season, which means he will have a chance to get high up in the rankings. And then there is of course Andy Murray who just keeps winning important titles. This week there is another important tournament in Dubai and with a lot of the top players withdrawing he will be the favorite to take the title again. |
