What does it mean to live a spiritual life?
By Ru-an Zietsmann
Spirituality is a journey, not a destination. What I mean by this is that to achieve enlightenemnt is a long journey and many things have to be experienced. There is many resting places along the road but a resting place should never become a home if the ultimate goal is to be achieved. Being a spiritual warrior one can't afford to to settle for what is illusion. In the end everything in the material world is illusion. Money, sex, power or whatever people chase after is impermanent. It will all fade into insignificance in the end. Knowing this it is surprising to see how these things make our world go around. Settling for these things is like settling for the map instead of the territory. What is the territory? The territory is your inner being which is connected to the Source. This part of you is immortal and invincible. Why not identify with that instead of the impermenant things of this world? Living a spiritual life is all about identifying with this authentic self and being willing to tear away illusion at evey turn. This entails not getting attached to any of the pleasures of this world. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the pleasures of this world, that is after all why they are here. But they should be seen for what they are, which is a part of the passing scenery. It's much better to find your authentic self because it can never leave you. Not even death can seperate you from your authentic self so in effect you will be immortal. This is what it means to be in this world but not of it. It's the ultimate prize and therefor well worth the effort. Enjoy the journey! |
