This Comeback is No Djoke
By Ru-an Zietsmann
Novak Djokovic aka "The Djoker" has announced that he is out of his slump by winning the Dubai tennis tournament yesterday. In the final he beat David Ferrer, another player who looks to be getting back into form, 7-5, 6-3. Djokovic who is number 3 in the world rankings has been struggling for form ever since the start of 2009. The critics were saying he doesn't have the heart and desire to remain at the top of the tennis world and that he will soon start slipping down the rankings. The Djoker had an ace up his sleave. After the win in Dubai he can hardly be accused of showing a lack of heart and desire. At the start of the tournament he was really struggling with his game. But instead of giving up he grinded out some important victories which helped with his confidence. With every match he looked to be improving and in the final against Ferrer he looked like the Djoker of old. Everything was working well and the lethal forehand was back in the groove, putting his opponent under constant pressure and hitting winners into the open court. When Djokovic is playing like this he is one of the most complete players on the tour and a pleasure to watch. In Ferrer he was facing a real test, Ferrer is known for his dogged fighting approach to tennis and he never beats himself. So a straight set victory over one of the toughest competitors on tour is enough to say that the Djoker is indeed back. The next big test will come in two weeks at Indian Wells where he will be defending his Masters Series title and the big names should be back after most of them withdrew from Dubai. So even though he didn't defeat any of the big names in tennis at Dubai I think Djokovic will be ready for his title defense and will have every chance of taking another big title. |
