The ego is an obstacle to happiness

The ego is an obstacle to happiness, if not the biggest obstacle. The ego is mainly concerned with past and future while the self dwells in the present moment. The ego strengthens itself by judging, analizing and adding more to itself. This only causes a person to move deeper into the illusion of I, Me and Mine. The ego in itself is not such a big problem. The world would be boring if we were all the same, uniqueness is important. The problem arises when we identify solely with the ego. You are not your ego, you are that which makes the existence of the ego possible. In other words you are spirit and one with all things. This is the true nature of reality. The appearence of a seperate human being with a seperate ego and personality is really an illusion. So if you identify with this part of yourself you identify with illusion. It's much more empowering to identify with your spiritual self which is immortal and real. There is no need for the ego to die, it's simply a matter of living in different realities at once. You can stil live as a seperate being in you body with a seperate personality but you will recognize that ultimately it is not real and nothing in the external world will ever get you down again. This is true power. In the society we live in power means having a lot of money, having an important job, being famous etc. This is not true power however, in fact these things can severly hinder you in finding authentic power. This is because these things can never fulfill you. There will always be more money to make, a more important job and more fame to gain. These things are not real, they can be taken away at any time. And even if they are not ultimately death will take them away. The one thing that can't be taken away is your soul, which survives after death. Therefor if you are identified with your spiritual self you are immune to all disappointments, even the disappointment of death. It is said that all fear ultimately comes from the biggest fear of all, the fear of death. This is why the ego always lives with an undercurrent of fear. It knows that no matter how much it adds to itself on earth it will all be taken away when death comes knocking. Why not identify with something real and lasting and become a God? How does one loosen the grip of the ego? Stop judging, analyzing and identifying with your thoughts. Nothing in the outside world is real, everything ultimately change. Therefor identify with spirit which is eternal. Live in the present and stop regretting the past or living for tomorrow. The best way to access spirit is by moving deeply into the Now. The Now is all you really have anyway, the past and future is merely concepts of the mind and therefor an illusion. One great way to access the Now and spirit is through the practice of meditation. Regular meditation not only have many health benefits but it calms the mind and takes us into the domain of spirit and help us identify with what is real.
