Rafael Nadal-King of Clay
By Ru-an Zietsmann
Rafael Nadal is arguably the greatest clay court specialist of all time. He is the only man since Bjorn Borg who has won four French Open titles in a row and also the first man since Borg to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year. In 2006 he also broke Guillermo Vilas' all time record of consecutive matches won on clay. Vilas' long standing record was 55 consecutive matches and Nadal eventually won 81 consecutive matches on clay. Therefor he has to be one of the best clay court players of all time, if not the best. Admittedly Borg has won six French Open titles in total, so Nadal does have some work to do. Nadal is just 22 years old though, which is young by any standards. So time will not be a problem. The only problem he could have is burnout. Nadal plays tennis at a very high intensity and this could catch up with him eventually. So injuries and mental burnout is his biggest dangers. If he can keep these problems at bay he should break Borg's record wthout a problem. But Nadal is not just a good clay court player. He proved this by winning Wimbledon in 2008 which is played on grass. He has also won four big tournaments on hard court and the Beijing Olympics, which was also played on hard. In the hard court grand slams he has also made two semi-finals. So even though Nadal's game is best suited for clay he is definitely not one dimensional. It would be unwise to put any challenge beyond the man whose earned the nickname 'Superman'. Nadal's desire and ambition makes him destined for greatness. |
