Its official: Federer has a coach!
By Ru-an Zietsmann
Its official, Roger Federer is working with tennis coach Darren Cahill. There has been much speculation about a coach for Federer after losing his Wimbledon crown last year to Rafale Nadal as well as this year's loss to Nadal in the final of the Australian Open. Since 2008 Nadal has dominated Nadal and taken over the nr. 1 spot in the rankings form Federer as well. Federer has been struggling with confidence when playing against Nadal and it is clear that a change was needed. There has been speculation whether he might team up with Brad Gilbert or Boris Becker as well, but Cahill seems to be the right match for Federer. Cahill was a close friend to Peter Carter, who died in a tragic car accident in South Africa and who was also Federer's childhood mentor. Federer has been without a coach for most of his career which is pretty strange for a professional player these days. No one would question it though since Federer has won 13 grand slams and dominated the tennis world for 4 years. He is trying to beat Pete Sampras' all time grand slam record of 14 grand slam titles but Nadal has recently made that a much harder goal to achieve then was expected. The Swiss maestro is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time but Nadal has presented him with his first real challenge. Federer desperately needs to reclaim his Wimbledon crown this year to remain a force in world tennis and Cahill might just be the man to help him do that. For now there is no official contract but Cahill has been working with Federer at Dubai the last few days. Federer needs emotional support one feels after the setbacks of late and someone that can help him solve the Nadal puzzle. Cahill might just bring the technical know how and friendship to the table that is needed to get Federer past Sampras' all important record.
