How tennis can be saved

By Ru-an Zietsmann

In my previous article I argued that tennis was dead, and in this article I will tell you how tennis can be saved. First off all lets look at why tennis is in a bad state right now. It's mostly because the grass of Wimbledon has been slowed down significantly. This means that it doesn't give assistence to big servers and serve and volley players anymore.

This in turn means that the base liners now have a chance to do well at Wimbledon which was underlined by the fact that Rafael Nadal won Wimbledon last year. This really emphasized how tennis has changed because Nadal was still viewed as a clay court specialist at that point. And he still is. The only thing that has changed is the surface speed at Wimbledon.

So now you have a situation where base liners rule the game because all the surfaces tennis are played on are friendly to them. In contrast the serve and volley players is all but gone because there is no surface that favors them anymore. For tennis to be saved there needs to be one surface that suits the base liners and one that suits the big servers and serve an volley players.

And the remaining surface which is hardcourt should give both style of players a chance to do well. This is why these days you only really see one style of play which is players slugging it out from the baseline. After all this is what makes tennis interesting, having different styles of play and seeing them compete against each other.

How dull would tennis be if all players played the same style?! So in the end the answer is pretty simple. Make the grass at Wimbledon fast once again so the serve and volleyers can apply their craft. This will bring the best players to the top once again, the players that can adapt to both fast and slow surfaces. And not only that but it will also make the most important rivaly in tennis competetive again.

I am talking about the Federer/Nadal rivalry of course. With Nadal winning Wimbledon and now the Australian Open the rivalry is all but dead and the future of tennis is looking bleak. Federer needs to reclaim his Wimbledon crown to kickstart the rivalry again and the only way to assure that is if they speed up the surface again.
