Federer withdraws from Dubai, Davis Cup

The lastest on Roger Federer is that he withdrew from the Dubai tournament and the Davis Cup tie against the USA. This come as a surprise as Federer hasn't been playing in any tournaments since his disappointing loss in the Australian Open. In a press statement he released yesterday he ascribes his loss to a back injury that has been bothering since the end of last year. However I don't buy that. There was no sign of a back injury during the Australian Open and this nothing more the lingering emotional pain form his loss down under. He's confidence would have taken another severe blow after losing to Nadal in another grand slam final after last year's Wimbledon so there is no doubt he is still licking his wounds. At least this is a good sign and shows the Federer is thinking about what he's doing. Dubai and the Davis Cup wouold have been stern tests and it's better that he skips it rather then play and lose more confidence. It seems he has learned his lesson from last year when he played some touraments right after Wimbeldon and consequently lost his number one ranking to Nadal. While Roger is still having off time form the tour I'm sure he would be giving a lot of thought as to how he will solve the Nadal puzzle. He surely must realize by now that he needs to approach the net more and change up the play. But more importantly he needs to somehow believe that he can beat Nadal again, because right now he clearly doesn't. This was all too evident in the Australian Open final. Another encouraging thing for Roger will be that Nadal has been having problems with his knees again in his latest tournament. Nadal pust a ot of pressure on his physique the way he plays and it's almost inevitable that he will develop injury problems. Hopefully for Roger that can work in his favor since he is much less prone to injury and it seems that ne needs more then a goos game plan these days to beat Nadal! |
