Federer speaks out of Dubai

By Ru-an Zietsmann

Roger Federer recently spoke out of Dubai where he has been training and visiting the Dubai tennis tournament. Some very interesting things came out of the interview he had with Xpress. The most interesting thing he said was that he does not believe on working on his weaknesses but rather on his strengths, which is is forehand and his serve.

This coming from arguably the greatest tennis player that ever lived. It makes a lot of sense too, why focus on your weaknesses? To me it makes a lot more sense to improve your strengths then work on your weaknesses. It just seems like a more positive philosophy.

When asked about the greatest tennis player of all time he said that it's hard to say but his first goal is to beat Pete Smapras' grand slam record of 14 grand slam titles. He is currently on 13 titles and he thinks it's more important to surpass Sampras' record then win the French Open, the only grand slam title he hasn't won so far.

About his future in tennis he said he feels it's important to chase one's dreams and that he's not thinking of quitting any time soon. At 27 years of age he still feels like he is young in terms of tennis and that he has 7 or 8 more years of tennis left in him and many more grand slam titles. This is great news for anyone any fan of Federer who thought his latest setback at the Australian Open has caused him to think about retirement.

Concerning not playing in the Dubai event he said that he does not feel 100% after his back injury yet and that he wants to have a long career so need to take any risks. You can be pretty sure that this is probably not true though. Someone in the Federer camp recently admitted that he was not injured, so it's pretty sure he is still recovering from his recent big dissapointment at the Australian Open. Mental injury would be closer to the truth.
