Federer off to good start

The Australian Open of 2009 got underway this week and Roger Federer got off to a winning start. He defeated Andreas Seppi from Italy 6-1, 7-6(4), 7-5. In the first set Federer was in sublime form not giving Seppi any chance to get into the match. Seppi is however a talented player and he soon settled down. The second set was a much closer affair as the scoreline suggests. Seppi even had a set point at 5-4 in the second set but was denied by a motivated Federer. The third set was also a tight affair with Federer squandering a match point at 5-4 on Seppi's serve. He would however take advantage of another match point at 6-5 on Seppi's serve to close out the match. In the end it was a pretty solid performance from Federer and he would be happy to have won this one in straight sets. Seppi is a difficult first round opponent and has the game to hurt top layers. Had he taken advantage of all his break chances this sould have been a long match. Seppi converted 0/10 break points, but it has to be said that Federer played well on these points. His serve was good as always and saved him in these moments. The court surface is a little slower this year and Roger tried to end the points a liitle quick, which caused him to make unforced errors. You got the feeling that Federer really wanted to prove a point and send a message to his rivals. It's great to see he is motivated and he has worked hard for this season. Can he win a fourth Australian Open title and tie Pete Sampras' grand slam record? Few would bet against it. |
