Djokovic redeems himself

By Ru-an Zietsmann

Novak Djokovic aka 'The Djoker' have redeemed himself at least to a certain degree in the Dubai tennis tournament after a disappointing start to the season. After beating the Czech Jan Hernych yesterday in a tough three set match he disposed of in form Croatian Marin Cilic in straight sets.

Cilic is one of only five players this season to have won two titles so he was always going to be a tough test for the world number three. If this was any other year Djokovic would have been the clear favorite but ever since the start of 2009 Djokovic has been struggling. One of the reasons for this was that while most players was working hard over the off season Djokovic decided to saty at his home in Monte Carlo and party into the new year.

So it was not surprising when he withdrew in the Australian Open quarter finals due to heat exhaustion. Many people were starting to question his heart and desire because he was simply not getting very good results. The tough match against Hernych might have been just what he needed to get his confidence back because against Cilic he looked like his old self again.

Djokovic will now face Giles Simon from France who is the third seed in the semi-finals. This should be another tough test for him. Should he go on to reach the final and win the tournament he would have completely redeemed himself in my mind. Dubai is a strong tournament and even though most of the big names withdrew a victory would give him the needed confidence to compete right at the top of the game again.
