Australian Open Preview
By Ru-an Zietsmann
It's not long now before the Australian Open, the first grand slam event of the tennis calender, gets underway. The big three as always will be the biggest title contenders and so will Any Murray, who has shown that he can do well at the slams by reaching the final of the US Open in 2008. Roger Federer will be the favorite in my opinion to make it number four in Australian Open titles, with Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic also in with a good chance. Andy Murray would desperately like to win also and who would count him out after his strong finish to 2008. Djokovic is the defending champ so he obviously has the game to win down under, and he also has had a strong finsh to 2008. Nadal will want to show that the physical strain his body has taken during his dominating 2008 season is all but history, and make another run at the title down under which of course he has never claimed. The main threats to the top four will be Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Andy Roddick and Nicolay Davydenko. All these players have an outside chance of winning the title and of course Tsonga is the 2008 finalist so he would probably be the main threat to the top four. Whatever the case may be the 2009 Australian Open promises to be as exciting as ever, with each of the top four players trying to edge ahead in the ranking as well as get their 2009 season off to the best start possible. |
