About Federer’s ‘Decline’

By Ru-an Zietsmann

The 2009 tennis season is under way and Roger Federer has played his first match in Doha, Qatar. It was a decent enough start but he would have been disappointed to lose to Andy Murray in the semi-finals. Andy Murray is the hottest player on tour at the moment so I don't think he would be too bothered by that. The most important thing would be the upcoming Australian Open.

Already I hear people talk of Federer's decline and that he should start thinking of retirement. So lets look at the facts then. Federer had the most wins in grand slam tournaments last year together with Rafael Nadal. He also won the last grand slam, the US Open, that was played. So since when should a player start thinking of retirement when he has that kind of a record?!

It's pretty obvious that there are people who just don't like Federer and would give anything to see him not breaking Pete Sampras' all time slam record. These people will scream retirement after every loss from Federer from now until the end of his career. So if you are a Federer fan, get used to it! When someone is the best in their field there will always be people who want to see them take the fall.

So for Federer it will be mostly about the grand slams from now on. When people look back on his career that's what his greatness will be measured by, not the amount of smaller tournaments he has won. As he grows older he realizes he has to conserve his energy for the grand slams and that has become evident by the way he has cut his playing schedule this year. It's all about breaking Sampras' slam record now.

He'll want to be in decent form before the grand slams and when they start he will want to peak. And that is exactly whats going on now. With the Australian Open starting in less then a week he is looking in good enough form to take another serious title run. If he wins down under he would have silenced the latest critics for a long time to come and already be tied with Sampras' record. Go Roger!!!
