2009-A Tennis Preview(Part 2)
By Ru-an Zietsmann
The last time I did a preview of the 2009 tennis season I focused mainly on the new talent that will give the top four players a run for their money in 2009. In this preview I will look at Roger Federer then, because he is still the main contender at the grand slams in my mind, even though he recently lost his number one ranking to Rafael Nadal. First of all Federer will want to put the average season of 2008 according to his own high standards behind him and show that it was just a slump, and not a decline with age. For him to do this he would at least have to win two slams. This would mean he passed the all time slam record of Pete Sampras and he would be 28, giving him time to put the record even further beyond any future contender for the record. If he wins only one title that would mean the speculation that he is in decline is probably right, and he would only have equaled Sampras' record. Ideally he would want to beat Sampras' record by at least two slams, just to make sure it cant be viewed as luck by any of the critics. Winning only one slam in 2009 will make that task a little harder. Winning no slams in 2009 at all would of course be a disaster but very unlikely in my mind. Winning three slams would be ideal and put him right back at the pinnacle of the men's game. This is something he has already achieved three times in his illustrious career by the way. Winning all four slams would of course be out of this world, but just like winning no slams at all this seems like a very unlikely outcome. With the greatest clay court player of all time around in Rafael Nadal he will really struggle to win the French Open. Already they have met in three finals in at the French and Federer lost every match, and the last one with a score of 6-1,6-3,6-0. So unless Nadal gets injured or loses against another player, which is also highly unlikely, Federer will struggle to win the French. Nadal on clay at the French Open is Federer's achilles heel in tennis, his one weakness in an otherwise flawless record. Like all superheros he has weakness. Whatever the case may be I think Federer is hungry for revenge, and he will be a very hard man to stop in 2009. He will be relaxed yet focused, looking to beat Sampras' slam record and confirm that he is the greatest of all time as early as 2009. |
