2009-A Tennis Preview

The year of 2008 is all but gone so a good time to preview the 2009 tennis season. I'm sure you wil agree with me that tennis is going through a pretty exciting period with the Federer vs Nadal rivalry still going strong, Djokovic right on their heels and Murray the new kid on the block. These top four players will be the main contenders when it comes to the grand slams and the bigger tournaments on the ATP tour. That doesn't mean they have a monopoly on these tournaments. There is some very exciting new talent emerging and already three new players in the top ten this year. These are Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Giles Simon and Juan-Martin Del Potro. These players all had break through seasons in 2008 and will look to continue their success in 2009. The first two players are from France and Del Potro is from Argintina. Tsonga made the final of the Australian Open last year and could well be France's first grand slam champion in a long time in the near future. Simon may not be as big a threat as Tsonga at the big tournaments but nevertheless have shown that he can take some big scalps. Del Potro went through a twenty four match winning streak during the American hard court season where he won four titles in a row, a truly astonishing performance. So definitely no shortage of young talent to give the top four some stiff competition going into 2009. |
